This word means ‘Resinated wine’. The word ‘Retsina’ is a protected Appellation with a geographical origin and only applies to the region of the Attic Peninsula, and only involves the use of a grape indigenous to the Attic Peninsula the Savatiano grape. Furthermore, the pine resin comes from a pine tree that is indigenous to the Attic Peninsula. The species called Pinus halepensis (Aleppo pine); pine resin has been known from very ancient times, to be an excellent preservative (it was first used by the Cretans in 1,700 BC to extend the life of wines) it has also been used in pharmacology for since early times because of its excellent natural herbal properties).
